The winner of the inaugural Urban Commissions competition, a joint initiative to stimulate the design sector by Design Days Dubai, d3 and Dubai Culture, Anna Szonyi, began her career studying fine art, architecture and furniture design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in her hometown Budapest before moving to the UAE in 2007. She has spent over 9 years practicing as an architect and design manager in the region. For Anna, entering Urban Commissions was a way for her communicate her relationship with Dubai, through the language of design.

URBAN COMMISSIONS’ LEGACY – WHAT LAST YEAR’S WINNER DID NEXT

In 2016, Hinjal Kumar, an architecture student at the American University of Sharjah and the only student in the 10 shortlisted finalists, won design initiative Urban Commissions with Bike d3. Her design responded to the brief to create a shelter for d3, plus it promoted lifestyle improvement. Bike d3 provides shade and an intimate space, and its spiral twist with a slatted bicycle storage system supports an alternative mode of commuting and moving around the new design district.
